Achieve Healthy Gums and Healthy Life with Periodontal Services
Are your gums swollen, tender, or redder than usual? The culprit could be gum disease. Gum or periodontal disease is the infection of the gums and surrounding tissues. Periodontal disease can cause gum recession, bone loss, and tooth loss if left to thrive. In severe cases, gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, and other systemic illnesses.
Dr. Kim Arnold Family Dentistry offers high-quality periodontal services to patients in Russell, Ashland, and beyond to prevent gum disease complications. Dr. Kimberly Arnold and her team are equipped to provide the care you need for a healthy smile.
How does gum disease develop?
Gum disease is often caused by dental plaque, a bacterial film that coats the tooth over time. Plaque not removed by brushing and flossing can irritate the gums, causing gingivitis.
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. At this stage, symptoms include:Â
- Swollen and sore gums
- Gums that bleed easily, especially when flossing or brushing
- Red or inflamed gums
- Tender gums
- Tooth sensitivity
If gingivitis isn’t addressed, it progresses into periodontitis. At this stage, gums are severely inflamed and start receding (pulling) away from the teeth. Gum recession causes deep periodontal pockets that become suitable hiding grounds for harmful bacterial and tartar deposits. Over time, advanced gum disease breaks down the underlying ligaments and bone, causing tooth loss!
How is gum disease treated?
Dr. Arnold takes a conservative approach to treating periodontal disease. Gingivitis can be easily managed with professional cleanings and proper at-home care. The dentist provides the following non-surgical options for moderate to advanced gum disease.
- Scaling: Deep teeth cleaning is a two-pronged treatment for gum disease, combining scaling and root planing(SRP). For scaling, the dentist uses manual and ultrasonic tools to debride dental calculus and bacterial toxins from the deep periodontal pockets. Scaling is like your standard dental cleaning but is more thorough and extends beyond the tooth surface. The dentist administers the procedure with anesthesia, and more than one visit may be necessary.
- Root planing: After scaling, the dentist smooths the roots of your teeth. This reduces the chances of re-infections and encourages re-attachment of the gums to your teeth.
While we offer effective periodontal treatments, we emphasize prevention. Brush and floss your teeth diligently and visit your dentist at least two times annually. Eat a balanced diet and quit tobacco use of any form.
Does gum disease affect systemic health?
Yes! Periodontal disease doesn’t just harm your gums—it can affect your overall health, too. The gum disease-causing pathogens can enter the bloodstream, triggering systemic inflammation. Uncontrolled periodontal disease has been linked to severe conditions like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory issues, and stroke. Prioritizing gum health is essential for maintaining overall well-being.
