What are dental inlays and onlays?
Dr. Kimberly Arnold is committed to addressing all your dental needs. Every patient is different and presents unique challenges in achieving a healthy, confident smile. Our office is excited to offer dental inlays and onlays as part of our restorative procedures.Â
We use dental inlays and onlays (indirect fillings) to repair tooth damage that’s too significant for a filling. An inlay repairs damage confined within the tooth’s cusps. However, a dental onlay extends over one or more cusps, covering a larger surface for enhanced protection and restoration. Dental onlays are also known as partial crowns because they fix extensive damage without full coverage.
How are dental onlays and inlays placed?
Indirect fillings are lab-made, and the process is almost similar to crown placement. First, the dentist will assess the tooth with dental X-rays. Any damaged/decayed portions of the tooth will be removed, and the tooth will be reshaped to accommodate the inlay or onlay.
Next, the dentist takes digital scans of your teeth, which our partner lab will use to fabricate your restoration. The fabrication takes a few days. In the meantime, we’ll protect your tooth with a temporary filling.
When your restoration is shipped to us, we’ll inform you to schedule an appointment for placement. The dentist will remove the temporary restoration and inspect the fit of your inlay or onlay. A few adjustments may be necessary before bonding the restoration securely to your tooth. Your treated tooth looks and functions like other teeth.
What are the benefits of dental inlays and onlays?
Dental inlays and onlays are the middle ground between crowns and fillings. Here are some benefits of indirect fillings.Â
- Conservative: Indirect fillings preserve more of your tooth structure than dental crowns. They provide strong protection to your tooth without compromising its structural integrity.Â
- Aesthetics: Dental inlays/onlays are created from tooth-like materials. They are hardly noticeable when used in the mouth.Â
- Durability: These restorations are more durable than traditional fillings. They can last over 20 years, so you may never have to replace them in your lifetime.Â
- Better reinforcement: Indirect fillings strengthen the weakened areas of your tooth, protecting it from further decay or damage.Â
- Perfect fit: Each dental inlay or onlay is customized to match your tooth’s exact shape or size for a comfortable fit.
- Minimal maintenance: Once placed, they require no special care—just regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.
Tooth damage can happen to anyone at any age. Indirect fillings repair the damage and restore your tooth to its pre-damaged state.
